Feed
Anderson, M. T. (2013). Feed. London: Walker Books.
This is a satirical science fiction novel about a group of teenagers living in a futuristic society. In their world, it is the norm to have a feed implanted into their brains. This feed constantly runs in their minds giving them advertisements to all the latest fashion trends, places to go, cars to buy, etc. Essentially they don't even have to think for themselves since the feed is always telling them what to think. The main character, Titus, meets a girl, Violet, who rocks his comfortable world. After a trip to the moon, Titus, Violet, and other teenage friends get their feeds hacked and go off the grid. They have to stay in the hospital in silence without their feeds as the doctors try to figure out how to fix things. During this time, Titus gets to know Violet more and starts to question all that he has ever known.
I really enjoyed this book because it is so easy to relate to with our current onslaught of advertisements through television, internet, and social media. It was easy for me to see how our society could go this far with the amount of consumerism that dominates our culture already. It was disturbing to read howViolet was ostracized for bucking the system and how Titus waffles between caring for her and her ideas and wanting to stay mainstream and not upset the status quo with his friends.
