The Legend of the Bluebonnet
DePaola, T. (1983). The
legend of the bluebonnet: An old tale of Texas. New York, NY: Putnam.
With beautiful artwork, famed author Tomie DePaola retells the Comanche Indian tale of the bluebonnet. Many years ago, there was a draught in the land and a young Indian girl name She-Who-Is-Alone sacrifices her favorite toy doll to the Great Spirits. In doing this, she hopes the spirits will forgive her people for their selfishness. As a sign of their forgiveness, the spirits cover the land in beautiful blue flowers, what we now call bluebonnets, the state flower of Texas.
DePaola's retelling is wonderful and along with the colorful illustrations, captures the eyes and hearts of both children and adults. I love the Comanche culture he displays in his artwork as well his storytelling. This is a good story to read to children to teach Texas History and the culture of Native Americans who once roamed the Texas hills freely.
