The Crossover

Alexander, K. (2014). The crossover. Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Josh is a twelve-year-old boy who loves basketball. He also has a twin brother, Jordon or "JB," who also plays basketball, but not with quite the same love of the game as Josh. Josh wants to follow in his father's footsteps, a former basketball star. Everything is going well in Josh's life until JB gets a new girlfriend. Josh is soon jealous that his brother is spending more and more time with her and less and less time with him and the family. Around the same time, Josh's dad starts having some health problems. Josh must learn to deal with his anger and come to understand and that his brother will always be there for him.

The style of this book is unique in that it is written in poetic verse, almost like a rap. Josh's voice clearly comes through and I think children will really enjoy it as it reads quickly but with depth. It is recommended for ages 10-12, but I even enjoyed it as an adult. It deals with the death of a father, which is a pretty heavy topic for younger children, but a good one to discuss during and after reading.
