Where the Wild Things Are

Sendak, M. (1963). Where the wild things are. New York, NY: Harper & Row.

This book has been a classic in children's literature for many years and for good reason. It is a story about a little boy named Max who is dressed up in his wolf suit and keeps causing trouble one evening. His mother scolds him and sends him to bed without supper. However, his room suddenly transforms into a wild jungle and he meets the wild things who make Max their king. Max is eventually called back to reality by his loving mother.

I love that this book is still as beloved today as it was when it was first published in 1963. Kids will still be able to relate to the rebelliousness of Max and the frustration and anger he feels toward his mother as she disciplines him. They will also love Max's wild imagination that transports him to such a faraway place where he can live out his wildness. On top of the wonderful story, Sendak's award-winning illustrations enthrall the reader with images of the wild things and places of Max's imagination.
