The Cheshire Cheese Cat: A Dickens of a Tale
Deedy, C.A., & Wright, R. (2011). The Cheshire Cheese cat: A Dickens of a tale. Atlanta, GA: Peachtree.
Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn is a famous London inn that is famous for the cheese it serves and a place famous writers visit, like Charles Dickens. It also happens to be where Skilley the alley cat wants to live, not just to get off the cold streets of London, but also to indulge in the cheese! He is hired on to get rid of the mice and soon makes a deal with the top Mouse, Pip. If Skilley keeps the mice safe, they will get him all the cheese he wants. Soon Skilley learns everyone at the inn is hiding something, including Pip.
Even if you aren't a fan of animal books, you will like this one. It is written with fun, tongue-in-cheek humor and is a great story about friendship, forgiveness, and sacrifice. This is a good first chapter book for younger readers and even has a glossary in the back. Fans of Dickens will love the references to the author and his writing.
