It's So Amazing! A Book about Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies, and Families
Harris, R.H., & Emberley, M. (1999). It’s so amazing! A book about eggs, sperm,
birth, babies, and families. Cambridge, MA: Candlewick Press.
This is an informational book recommended for children ages seven and up. Using a bird and a bee as narrators, the book discusses everything from how babies are made, puberty and human development, pregnancy and birth, and even adoption. Each page is filled with informational illustrations that include comments by the bird and bee along the way. Similar to the popular television series for kids, The Magic School Bus, the book gives kids an inside look inside their bodies and shows them how each reproductive part functions with even the sperm and egg making funny comments to keep it light for kids.
I think this book is great way to explain how babies are made to children and answer tough questions they may have about sex and reproduction. It includes a chapter on different kinds of love, even homosexuality. Illustrations reflect various cultures, religious affiliations, family dynamics, and different body types. Other books in the series include It's NOT the Stork! A Book about Girls, Boys, Babies, Bodies, Families, and Friends for kids age four and up and It's Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex, and Sexual Health for kids age ten and up.
