Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy's Parade

Sweet, M. (2011). Balloons over Broadway: The true story of the puppeteer of Macy’s Parade. Boston, MA: Hougton Mifflin Books for Children.

Tony Sarg grew up as a young boy creating marionettes and one day become a puppeteer for Macy's. He was hired to create puppets for Macy's holiday windows. People loved his puppet parades in the windows so much that eventually Tony created costumes, floats and then the iconic huge balloon "puppets" for the famous Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

I have watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day for years and never knew its history! This book does a wonderful job using the true story of Tony Sarg's childhood and eventual success working for Macy's with adorable and colorful collage illustrations. I encourage you to read this book to children near the holidays and then have them watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade knowing its fun history.
