Skulduggery Pleasant

Landy, D. (2007). Skulduggery Pleasant. New York, NY: HarperCollins.

This is a fantasy story about Stephanie, a twelve-year-old girl, whose uncle has died and left her with his fortune and home, but it comes with a price. She finds out soon enough someone doesn't want her around and it's not just her jealous, superficial family members who wanted it for themselves. She soon meets mysterious Skulduggery, a dead skeleton, who has been charged with protecting and helping Stephanie in continuing her uncle's work at defeating evil Serpine. Stephanie must quickly learn magic and stop him to save the world!

The dialogue between Stephanie and Skulduggery is what really makes this book fun to read. There's also action, adventure, and lots of magic thrown in for good measure. Older kids will love to read this and root for Stephanie as she rushes to find a way to stop Serpine. I would recommend it for kids age 10 and up.
