A Fine, Fine School
Creech, S. (2001). A
fine, fine school. New York, NY: Joanna Cotler Books/HarperCollins
Everyday Tillie's principal goes around her school commenting on how wonderful the kids and teachers at his school are. He loves his fine, fine school. One day he suggests that they even have school on Saturdays. So Tillie starts going to school on Saturdays, too. Then Mr. Keene suggests having school on Sundays, too. After Tillie goes to school on Sundays, Mr. Keene suggests they have school on holidays, too. Tillie's brother is so sad when she has to go school, even on Christmas. Eventually Mr. Keense even wants school every single day, even in the summer! Finally Tillie gets the courage to talk to Mr. Keene and tell him how her brother and dog aren't learning from her with her at school everyday and how she isn't learning things like how to climb a tree. Mr. Keene sees that maybe having school every day isn't the best idea.
This is good picture book to read aloud to young children while watching their reactions as Tillie's principal increases school attendance more and more. It is also good for adults and kids to see and discuss how learning doesn't just take place inside the classroom, but also at home when kids play and learn from each other. I think this book is a welcome break from some of the intensity and testing kids are faced with in today's schools.
