Rapunzel's Revenge
Hale, S., Hale, D., & Hale, N. (2008). Rapunzel’s revenge. New York, NY:
Bloomsbury.
This story is a fun twist on the class fairy tale of Rapunzel. In this version with a Western twist, Rapunzel has been kidnapped by someone claiming to be her mother, Gothel, and lives in a villa surrounded by a large wall that prevents her from seeing out. On her twelfth birthday she finally climbs over the wall and coincidentally meets her real mother who has been forced to do hard labor working in the mines that make Gothel rich. Gothel's guards soon carry her back inside the villa. Gothel is livid and banishes Rapunzel to a forest and magically grows a super tall tree where Rapunzel is prisoner. One day she uses her hair to lasso a nearby tree and escapes. She meets Jack (of Jack and the Beanstalk) and together they pursue justice for the people Gothel has wronged and revenge on Gothel.
This graphic novel is fun to read and is full of adventure. Girls and boys alike will enjoy getting to know a new Wild West Rapunzel as she proves how brave and determined she is to make things right both for others and herself. The illustrations are full of detail and color and add to the excitement and action of the story.
