Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes
Crutcher, C. (2003). Staying fat for Sarah Byrnes. New York, NY: Harper Tempest.
Eric "Moby" Calhoune and Sarah are seniors in high school and best friends. Recently, Sarah was hospitalized because she refuses to talk. Eric isn't sure if she is faking or truly can't speak, but he's willing to do whatever it takes to help her heal and be well again. Sarah has always been there for him, especially when they were younger and Eric was overweight and didn't have any other friends. Sarah has scars all over her face and hands from burns she got when she was really little, so she understood how it felt to be an outcast. As Eric visits Sarah in the hospital, he finds out a secret about Sarah's childhood and her accident and helps her confront it. Things take a turn for the worse as Sarah begins to speak again and leaves the hospital.
This is a great book for teens to read about the strong bond between two friends and the lengths they will go to for one another. The issues that Eric and Sarah deal with are very relatable for teens going through similar situations. The author creates such rich characters that completely engages readers and keeps them reading. There is also quite a bit of humor throughout which helps at times keep the heavy subject matter from weighing the reader down.
