This story is about young Nick and Allie after their families' two cars collide in a fatal car accident. Both Nick and Allie "die," but collide in transit between the land of the living and the dead and are now stuck in limbo. They soon meet Leif, who died before in a flood, and helps them come to understand the fact that they are dead and navigate the rules of this new world. As Allie longs to return home, he tries to convince her it's not safe. However, Allie is hardheaded and decides to try anyway with Nick by her side. They quickly learn of the dangers and hidden traps lying ahead of them in this magical place. One dangerous creature is the McGill, a monster intent on capturing those that have died. They also meet Mary who Nick likes right away, but she is a bit deceptive. Soon the children are faced with a choice as they discover there is a way to escape this strange land between death and life.
This is a really creative story full of fantasy and adventure. Although it sounds like another ghost story, it really isn't scary or haunting. Even with a plot line as imaginative as this one is, it still manages to include real love, pain, and loss for each character as they travel between life and death.
