Scowler
This is a gripping, gruesome, and at times hard-to-read book of horror that will keep you up at night. Ry Burke is a nineteen-year-old boy who suffered terrible physical, mental, and emotional abuse at the hands of his father, Marvin Burke, when he was a child. Then one day Ry couldn't take it any more and snapped. He stood up to his father for the abuse he doled out to both him and his mother and was able to escape to a neighbor's farm. Subsequently, Marvin is jailed and Ry and his mother and little sister, Sarah, have to make a living on their farm. Ten years later, Marvin escapes from the penitentiary after a meteor strikes it and shows back up at their door. Shortly after another meteor falls on their farm, setting off a string of wickedness from Marvin and twisted responses from Ry in his fragile mental state.
Daniel Kraus is an extremely talented writer. After reading his bio and learning he is also a filmmaker, I can see how he is so masterful at description of scenery, characters, and the inner workings of the human psyche. Even though this is a YA book, it could easily be read as an adult novel. The themes of intimidation and control, relationship between father and son, insanity, and monsters run throughout the book and are only amplified by a dark and ominous tone that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
