Nonfiction

Nonfiction books are the only books defined by what they are not - it is an umbrella term for:
  • Narrative
  • Expository
  • Biography
  • Autobiography
  • Memoir
Nonfiction for Young Adults: From Delight to Wisdom by Betty Carter and Dick Abrahamson
Evaluting Nonfiction for Children:
  • What are the qualifications of the author?
  • Are the facts accurate?
  • What is the purpose and scope of the book?
  • How does the organization of the book assist readers in locating information?
  • What role do visuals play?
I think nonfiction books are some of the harder ones to sell for YA readers. They seem to have a preconceived notion that these are boring informational texts without any story. After reading The Notorious Benedict Arnold for this class I know this is not always the case. I must be proactive in seeking out these types of nonfiction books that read like stories to interest even the most hesitant YA reader. As I evaluate nonfiction books, I will use the questions above to determine if in fact the book is worthy to be read.
