The Knife of Never Letting Go
Ness, P. (2008). The knife of never letting go. Somerville, MA: Candlewick Press.
This is a science fiction/horror story about a young boy named Todd who is thirteen-years-old, which in his world makes him very close to becoming a man. He lives in Prentisstown, a town of only men, where everyone has been infected with Noise, a germ that killed off all the women and enables the men to all hear each other's thoughts. Todd and the men can even hear animals' thoughts. Everyone was infected with this germ after a war between the Spackle aliens and humans. The humans won, but not before they were infected with the Noise by the aliens. As Todd literally tries to escape the Noise that is constantly around him, he discovers a hole in it where there is silence. Todd is forced to leave Prentisstown with his dog, Manchee, and never come back after he tells his foster parents about the hole. As he travels away from his home, Todd encounters a girl. He must find out how she was able to survive without being infected by the Noise and also who he really is and what the men of Prentisstown have been hiding without all the Noise surrounding him.
This book is very suspenseful and keeps you guessing. The writing is gritty and violent at times which adds to this odd, dystopian world the author has created. Todd's narration is exactly like his Noise, an inside look into all of his thoughts and questions. The author even uses incorrect spelling to portray Todd's lack of education and rough character. The relationship between Todd and his dog is also special and touching.
