Merrow
Braxton-Smith, A. (2010). Merrow. Somerville, MA: Candlewick Press.
This is a work of fiction with a little fantasy and folklore mixed in for good measure. It tells the story of twelve-year-old Neen whose father, a fisherman, died in a drowning accident and whose mother disappeared shortly after. She has been raised by an aunt Ushag who doesn't share much in the way of of how or why her mother left. However, Neen still manages to hear tale after tale from others around the island of the merrow people, or mermaids, along with other tales of selkies, krakens, and changelings. Neen has come to believe that her mother has rejoined the merrow people. She sets out to find out the truth while also discovering more about the enchanting land around her and its history.
The author does a masterful job of storytelling in this book by mixing in the folktales and culture of the Carrick culture of Northern Ireland. She fills the book with details that make the scenery come alive and real.
