The Notorious Benedict Arnold: A True Story of Adventure, Heroism, & Treachery
Sheinkin, S. (2010). The notorious Benedict Arnold: a true story of adventure, heroism, & treachery. New York, NY: Roaring Brook Press.
This is an excellent work of nonfiction that will completely engage any young adult reader. It tells the complete story of Benedict Arnold and how he rose to power within the American Revolution, commanded militias, led armies, and how he conducted himself in his personal life. The author has done a wonderful job of researching every source available on Arnold and has included details that add to his story, making it an adventurous and enjoyable read. He begins Arnold's tale from the end of his life, heading to the gallows. This grabs the reader's attention and makes one wonder what could possibly transpire to lead to such a tragic ending? The author then goes back thirty-nine years earlier to tell the history of Arnold's family, from the first Arnold to sail to America in the 1600's to the birth of Benedict Arnold in 1741. Arnold grew up as a well known prankster and then later became a bit of a hot-headed rebel known to fly off the handle. He had a hunger for power, fame, and fortune, and stopped at nothing to achieve these things. As the story progresses, Arnold becomes more well known and even well respected by George Washington. However, his story takes a turn for the worse when he is slighted over and over again by Congress and other military officers and makes a fateful decision.
This book reads like a novel, but is filled with facts. It is a great source of information for a student researching Benedict Arnold or the American Revolution. I love the first-hand accounts included throughout the book.
