Slammed
Hoover, C. (2012). Slammed. New York, NY: Atria Paperback.
Slammed is a realistic fiction novel about Layken, an eighteen-year-old girl, dealing with her mother's terminal cancer and love for her English teacher (who also happens to be her neighbor), Will Cooper. Layken's father passed away recently and so she, her younger brother, and her mother move from Texas to Ypsilanti, Michigan, where her mom is from. She soon meets Caulder, Will's younger brother, and soon after meets and falls for Will. They go on a date and are smitten with each other only to find out Will is Layken's English teacher once school starts. Will tries to do the right thing and end the relationship, but their tie is too strong and they aren't able to keep their distance.
This is an interesting storyline and I like that the author includes poetry as Will teaches Layken to appreciate poetry and how it can help her with her feelings, especially through slam poetry. I also appreciate how the author explores the teenage emotions that accompany a move from one state to another, falling in love, and coping with a mom's cancer diagnosis.
