Invisible

Hautman, P. (2005). Invisible. New York, NY: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers.

This is the disturbing story of Douglas "Dougie" Hanson and his obsession with model trains, his best friend, Andy, and fire. The story starts out fairly normal enough, but it doesn't take long for it some red flags about Dougie's behavior to start to show. It becomes increasingly clear that his friendship with Andy isn't all that it seems and that his love for his model train and city he's building in the basement isn't quite healthy. As Dougie is accused of different things at school and outside of school, it becomes clear he is falling deeper and deeper into an imagined reality.

I found this book to be a very quick read and hard to put down. As the reader, you know something is amiss but I love how the author only gives you Dougie's side of things and keeps you guessing if all is at it seems up until the very end. It is difficult to read at times because you know some of Dougie's behavior is wrong, but you still feel sorry for him because he truly believes he is ok.
